Student dies after bus hit by van

A teenager from Quebec passed away in Kelowna General Hospital from injuries suffered in an accident near Castlegar.

The 18-year-old woman was among 16 students traveling in a BC Transit bus when it was sideswiped by a Purolator cube van on Thursday, June 30.

The young woman had been attending an English-language program at Selkirk College in Castlegar.

“The driver of the courier van remained at the scene,” said Inspector Chad Badry with BC Highway Patrol in the Kootenays.

“As BC Highway Patrol Nelson are attempting to determine why the courier driver crossed over the center
line, they are looking for anyone, including anyone with dashboard camera video of pre-collision driving,” Badry added.

Video from the BC Transit bus showed three vehicles, a blue 2 door coupe, a silver SUV, and an older grey Pathfinder, driving behind the courier driver who may have specific information.
