The City of Vernon has received mostly positive public responses on the proposed athletic park on the site of the former Kin Race Track in the second round of public engagement.

Results of a public survey conducted between April 27 and May 26 showed that 46.7 per cent of respondents said they like the park design, 37.6 per cent said it was okay, and 15.7 per cent said they did not like it.

The survey had 963 respondents, 343 (35.6 per cent) of whom said they somewhat agreed that the park would fit their family’s needs, while 263 (27.3 per cent) said it would definitely fit their needs. Comparatively, 107 respondents (11.1 per cent) stated the park would definitely not meet their family’s needs, while 123 (12.7 per cent) somewhat disagreed that the park would meet their needs.

Respondents indicated that the ‘Walking Trails in the Wetland’ would be the amenity they would most likely use, followed by the ‘Greenspace and Places to Relax Outdoors’ and then ‘Natural Play Area and Splash Pad.’ The ‘Separated Bike Lane’ and ‘Tree Lined Promenade’ were indicated as the amenities least likely to be used.

The findings of the survey, which includes roughly 80 pages containing 696 comments from respondents that range from short entries such as “I like it” to comments that were entire paragraphs offering alternate ideas for the site, will be presented to Vernon City Council at the regular meeting Monday, June 13.

Administration is recommending that council endorse the concept plan for the proposed Kin Race Track Athletic Park, subject to recommendations from the geotechnical, environmental, archeological and traffic impact assessments. Council is also expected to task staff with continuing those assessments at the meeting.

It is also recommended that council direct staff to develop a project phasing plan and funding strategy.
