Manufacturer turns a problem into opportunity

Paxton Industries Ltd. in Vernon has taken a business challenge and turned it into a golden opportunity.

The supply chain issues caused by COVID-19 forced the company to look to China to find bottles for their products. After missing a deadline to ship to a major client because the bottles were still at sea, they decided to try something else.

“We saw it as an opportunity to secure equipment and produce those bottles here in North America, here in our facility. We have brought in a blow-molding machine, not only to produce bottles for ourselves but for other clients as well,” President and CEO Darrell Weatherill said.

Paxton Industries President and CEO Darrell Weatherill talks about the growth of the company.

The company has invested $400,000 in the blow-mold machine, an articulating labelling machine, liquid filling equipment, and technology to design and print product labels.

The company can get 500 mold blanks shipped in the same size box they were previously receiving 40 already made bottles.

“We were paying a lot for air,” Weatherill noted.

The gamble is paying off with North American companies “near sourcing” supplies. The firm recently fulfilled a 100,000 unit bottle order for a Denver company, and is gaining traction in both Canada and the U.S.

The company started in June of 2020 and acquired Chemac Industries in July 2020. Chemac started in 1984 and developed products like Odor Gone and Road Film Remover.

The product line is heavy on cleaning and automotive products and can be found in dozens of retail chains across Canada, including London Drugs and Lordco.

Every product in the 40 item line-up started out as a solution to a problem; had to be cost effective and safe for the environment and the user.

Paxton Industries’ vision statement is prominently displayed stating: “to make the world a cleaner, healthier place.’

Located in a 16,000 square foot warehouse at 2506- 41 Street, Paxton employs eight full time staff and up to 30 part-time staff.

“With our growth, we are hoping to move to 30 FTE’s,” VP of Sales and Marketing Dave Weatherill told Vernon Matters.

White labeling (producing products for other companies) and bottle sales currently amount to less than 10 per cent of the business, but could reach 50 per cent given the growing demand fo a reliable quality supply. The company is also investigating making its own bottle blanks and has a goal to use 100 per cent recycled plastic.
