UPDATE: Evacuation alert lifted for mobile home park residents

An evacuation alert issued for residents of the Sicamous Creek Mobile Home Park has been lifted.

The alert covered 27 residences in the park on Highway 97A.

It was issued last Thursday (May 5) by the District of Sicamous due to a potential threat of a landslide in the Wiseman Creek area.

“All properties in the evacuation alert area are now ALL CLEAR,” a news release issued at 10:40 a.m. from the Columbia Shuswap Regional District stated.

Threat of landslide remains for mobile home park residents

The rain has stopped which has eased the danger of a landslide for residents of a neighbourhood in Sicamous.

However, an evacuation alert, which was issued Thursday, May 5, remains in effect until further notice for the 27 residences of the Sicamous Creek Mobile Home Park on Highway 97A.

“Conditions in the Wiseman Creek drainage improved overnight as precipitation levels were reduced from earlier in the day,” an update from the Columbia Shuswpa Regional District stated. “Rainfall amounts were not significant enough to trigger a landslide, however, the threat remains.”

The regional district said there is no estimate at this time on when the alert might be lifted.

“The Shuswap Emergency Program is closely monitoring forecasting reports from its Early Warning System. This will guide decisions about when it may be appropriate to lift the evacuation alert.”

Earlier this year, engineers determined the slopes in the Wiseman Creek area were unstable and there was a good chance of a landslide due to damage from the Two Mile Road wildfire last summer. The District of Sicamous got a $30,000 grant from the province to develop an early warning system for that area.
