Long-Term Care Beds

Expansion brings 90 new care beds to Vernon

Construction has started on 90 new publicly-funded long-term care beds in Vernon.

The new beds are part of an expansion of Creekside Landing at 6190 Okanagan Landing Road which provides long-term care, assisted living and independent living services

“[The addition of beds] is to ensure seniors can continue to receive care where they live, as well as provide opportunities for jobs in health care,” said Mable Elmore, Parliamentary Secretary for Seniors’ Services and Long-Term Care, who was in Vernon on behalf of Health Minister Adrian Dix.

“I’m excited to announce that construction is now underway officially for 90 new long-term care beds in the community, and the new beds are an expansion to Creekside Landing and are expected to be ready by June 2023.”

Elmore added that the expansion will help accommodate the growing senior population in Vernon and the Okanagan.

“The announcement is another substantive step to enhance seniors care in British Columbia, and this investment of 90 long-term care beds that ensures seniors and elders in the Vernon area will have access to care close to their loved ones when they require it,” said Elmore, adding that there’s more work to be done but this is a good step in the right direction.

“This is truly an exciting day for seniors and their families in Vernon, we’re grateful for this future planning and leadership to meet the growing need of long-term care in Vernon and the surrounding area,” said Vernon-Monashee MLA Harwinder Sandhu.

“As the MLA for this area, I hear from seniors and their families the need for such services, and to see the work underway is truly gratifying, not only as the MLA, but as previously having worked as a health care worker both in acute care and community nursing, I have first-hand seen the need and the growing demand of this type of services.”

After a competitive bidding process, the contract was awarded to Kaigo Senior Living.

The new facility, located behind the existing Creekside Landing property, is being designed to create a comfortable living situation for residents.

“The new building will be three-storeys, but within the overall building, there will be eight houses. Each house will accommodate either nine to 13 residences and will have its own kitchen, dining, lounge, and activity areas, similar to what we have in our own home, as well as patios on the ground floor and decks on the upper floors for residents and families to enjoy,” said Kevin Svoboda, President and CEO of Kaigo Senior Living.

“Care staff will be dedicated to a house so they get to know the residents and their likes and dislikes. This is really good for continuity and consistency.”

The residents’ rooms will be approximately 23 square meters in size and have a ceiling lift from the bed to the bathroom, each of which are equipped with a shower.

There will also be a number of amenities throughout the building and the property for residents to enjoy.

“A chapel, reflection room, arts and crafts, library, occupational therapy, physical therapy, a general store, bistro area, and a variety of quiet lounges throughout the entire home,” said Svoboda.

“The entire building will be barrier free, and will allow indoor and outdoor accessibility for both ambulatory individuals and those in wheelchairs. Beautiful, secure garden areas will be provided around the building, there will be designated spots for active programs like horticulture and gardening, as well as areas for relaxing, sitting, and enjoying the great views.”

Additionally, the site will feature a large gazebo, walking paths, and a pedestrian bridge over Vernon Creek, connecting the site of the new building with the existing Creekside Landing facility.

The new beds are expected to be ready for residents by June 2023.

The expansion will create approximately 59 full-time jobs.

The 90 beds in Vernon are part of a provincial investment to open up 495 long term care spaces across the Interior Health region.

“We know people are living longer than ever, and the number of people with significant medical issues who need to access 24-hour care continues to grow,” said Diane Shendruk, Vice-President of Clinical Operations for Interior Health.

“This new investment represents a step in the right direction for seniors. Providing warm and welcoming spaces for seniors to be care for in their home communities will support those in care as they live out their days in safety and comfort.”

Shendruk added that seniors and elders who require care “deserve to live in a home that provides a ‘bright, comfortable atmosphere as well as exemplary medical care,” and that both these elements will be met at the new facility.
