MLAs, minister tour Vernon, identify priorities for area
Members of the B.C. NDP Rural Caucus toured through Vernon today, identifying key priorities in the process.
Vernon-Monashee MLA Harwinder Sandhu led the tour for Katrine Conroy, Minister of Forests and MLA for Kootenay West, Roly Russell, Parliamentary Secretary for Rural Development and MLA for Boundary-Similkameen, and Brittny Anderson, the Premier’s Special Advisor on Youth and MLA for Nelson-Creston.
Speaking with members of the media, Conroy said the wildfires last year showed the need to take action, and that the B.C. government has committed to do work on that front.
“There’s always concerns [with wildfires], but the exciting news from Budget 2022 is we are moving to a 12 month of the year working situation for the B.C. Wildfire Services,” said Conroy adding that the service will be hiring more members to meet the requirements for fighting fires when they start and for fire mitigation work outside of the wildfire season.
