The orange-coloured electric scooters that made their debut in Vernon last year, are ready for their second season.

Neuron Mobility will launch its e-scooter rental program on Tuesday. The devices will be available throughout the summer and into the fall and winter as weather permits.

The company, which is partnering with the City of Vernon, said data from the first season showed the service was popular among residents and visitors and made a meaningful impact on the local economy, while also helping the environment

“In 2021, 40 per cent of e-scooter trips replaced a journey, saving an estimated 10 tonnes of CO2 emissions,” a news release from Neuron stated.

A Neuron rider survey found 60 per cent of respondents used e-scooters to visit restaurants, cafes, and to explore the city, while 59 per cent of riders confirmed that they made a purchase during their most recent trip.

Riders, who must be at least 16 years of age, can book and use the e-scooters through Neuron’s app. Single trips cost $1.15 to unlock the e-scooter and 35 cents per minute thereafter.

The kick scooters are fitted with an integrated helmet, and helmets are mandatory for use in Vernon.

Neuron will also be announcing the introduction of e-bikes for Vernon.

Vernon Mayor Victor Cumming said the city welcomes the return of the scooters.

“Many residents and visitors have already embraced this new mode of transportation as a convenient and sustainable way to get to work, explore the city, and visit local businesses,” said Cumming. “The numbers from last year already show what a significant impact the program is having on our community and the environment.”
