Time running out to request larger cart for Vernon’s organics program

Feb 23, 2022 | 3:40 PM

Larger Vernon households, and those with bigger yards and gardens, are encouraged to be prepared for the start of the city’s new curbside organics program.

The deadline for Vernon residents to request a larger, 240 litre organics cart is this Friday, Feb. 25.

“Vernon’s new curbside organics collection service is anticipated to begin May 2,” a city news release stated. “To collect organic materials (such as kitchen food scraps and yard waste) and set them at the curb, every household with automated garbage collection will be given a new 120 L cart with a green lid unless they sign up to get a larger 240 L organics cart.”

The city suggests households with five or more people who have large lots, and yards with gardens and orchards, may need the bigger cart.

To order one, go to Vernon.ca/organicscart to fill out a form to request the 240 L cart. The request form will be open until 3:30 p.m. this Friday, Feb. 25.

Residents who don’t have access to a computer and who need the larger bin can call 250-549-6757 for assistance in filling out the request form.

Organics will be collected weekly. The standard 120 L organics carts will hold about the same amount of kitchen scraps and yard waste as one standard yard waste bag. The 240 L cart will hold about the same amount that can be contained in two standard yard waste bags.

More information will be provided over the next few months about the new organics program, as well as the change to bi-weekly residential garbage collection, schedules and maps.

Residents can follow VernonMatters.ca or check the city’s website and social media channels for updates.
