Armstrong is ready to start construction on its new city hall.

The city will hold a ground breaking ceremony at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27 at the site at 3395 Pleasant Valley Road across the street from the current city hall which has been in use since 1917.

The city will also host a public information session on the new building, starting at 10:30 a.m. that same day at the Odd Fellows Hall.

“This session will provide the public with an opportunity to ask questions, view design drawings, and speak with mayor and council,” said the city’s chief administrative officer, Dawn Low.

The city is borrowing $4-million dollars to construct the new facility. ANR Construction of Kelowna was awarded the contract for a bid price of $4,061,561, with a construction timeline of 48 weeks.

Mayor Chris Pieper said the existing city hall has served the community well for the last century.

“We are confident that the new building will serve our residents for the next century,” said Pieper.

The new building will provide a larger council chambers with more seating for the public along with expanded office space for staff, better storage for records management, as well as an emergency operations center on the lower floor.

The exterior of the building will be constructed with durable, sustainable materials with a garden space and seating for the public.

COVID-19 safety protocols and procedures will be in place for the information session and the attendees are asked wear masks and practice social distancing.

The meeting is open to anyone dropping by, but to appropriately manage capacity at Odd Fellows Hall the public is asked to RSVP their attendance by emailing info@cityofarmstrong.bc.ca or calling 250-546-3023.

“If you have any questions or are curious about the city hall project, we urge residents of Armstrong to come to the public information session at the Odd Fellows Hall, have a coffee, view the design drawings and have your questions answered,” said Low.

For those unable to attend the session in person, the information will also be available on the City of Armstrong’s new website.

For safety reasons, only city council members, staff and media will be allowed to attend the ground breaking as it is an active construction site.
