Vernon/Coldstream among the leaders for vaccinations in children, seniors

The Vernon and Coldstream area continues to have some of the highest vaccination rates for children age five to 11 and seniors aged 70 and over.

As of Monday, Jan.10, 40 per cent of children aged five to 11 in Vernon and Coldstream had received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Figures from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control showed that rate was the fifth highest in the Interior after Okanagan Mission (55 per cent), Glenmore (47 per cent), Penticton (42 per cent) and Kamloops Centre South (42 per cent).

The vaccination rate in Vernon/Coldstream for children aged five to 11 was also higher than the Interior as a whole, which was recorded at 34 per cent Monday, and is just below the 44 per cent rate for all of British Columbia.

Data from the BCCDC also showed 77 per cent of Vernon/Coldstream seniors aged 70 and over have received a third dose of a vaccine.

That rate was the fourth highest in the Interior after Okanagan Mission (80 per cent), Kamloops Centre South (79 per cent), and Kamloops Centre North (78 per cent). Penticton and Glenmore also had vaccination rates of 77 per cent for that age group as of Monday.

As a whole, the Interior’s third dose rate for people aged 70 and over was at 72 per cent Monday, while the provincial rate was 73 per cent.

Looking at age breakdowns for the Vernon/Coldstream area, the BCCDC reports that as of Monday, 83 per cent of residents aged 12–17 have received a first jab and 78 per cent are double dosed. In the 18–49 demographic, 82 per cent of Vernon/Coldstream residents have received a first dose and 78 per cent are fully vaccinated with two doses. In the 50 and above category, the vaccination rates were 91 per cent for first doses and 89 per cent for second jabs.

In the demographic breakdowns for first doses in the Interior, Kettle Valley and Merritt had the lowest vaccination rates for children aged five to 11 at 16 per cent; Enderby had the lowest rate for the 12–17 age group at 48 per cent and for the 18–49 group at 65 per cent; while Kettle Valley had the lowest rate for the 50 and over category at 78 per cent.

As a whole, the Interior’s vaccination rates for the 12 and over age group were recorded at 87 per cent for first doses, 84 per cent for second jabs and 31 per cent for third or booster shots.

Comparatively, the provincial vaccination rates for all British Columbians aged 12 and over as of Monday were 92 per cent for first doses, 89 per cent for second jabs and 27 per cent for third or booster shots.
