Two men arrested after six-hour stand off in Williams Lake

WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — A man who Williams Lake RCMP call a prolific offender was arrested after a six-hour stand-off with police on New Year’s Eve.

Mitchell Nicholas Jeff’s charges include pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, obstructing a police officer, and uttering threats.

The charges stem from when RCMP responded shortly after 7 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 31) where they received a firearms complaint in the 900-block of Western Avenue.

RCMP say Jeff and the other occupant of the residence refused to exit the residence. Due to involvement of a firearm, the RCMP Emergency Response Team was activated and safely arrested both men. The Emergency Response Team deals with situations where extreme danger and firearms are above the ability of detachments.

“While the victims in this instance are known to the accused, they are not believed to be involved in criminal behavior with the accused,” Cpl. Brett Squire says. “This incident was not random, and there is no risk to the general public.”

Jeff remains in custody as his matter is before the courts.
