Scratch and Win are not for kids: BCLC

Dec 15, 2021 | 11:15 AM

British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) is reminding the public to not gift scratch and win tickets to children this holiday season.

BCLC has launched its annual #GiftSmart program to raise awareness of the fact that scratch and win tickets are a form of gambling and are not suitable for minors.

“Research continues to demonstrate that introducing gambling activities to minors can be a risk factor for developing gambling problems later in life,” said Dr. Jamie Wiebe, BCLC’s Director of Player Health.

“With all of the pressure to deliver the perfect gifts to our loved ones at this busy time of year, as adults it’s important to remember not to reach for lottery tickets for anyone under the age of 19.”

Research by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) and McGill University’s International Centre for Youth Gambling has found that adult problem gamblers reported an earlier onset of gambling, most of whom began between the ages of 10 and 19.

Male adolescents report gambling more frequently than females, though female adolescents are more likely to play the lottery.

BCLC has partnered with these NCPG and McGill University to enhance awareness of the risks of underage gambling and encourage healthy play. Along with providing public education through their #GiftSmart campaign, BCLC encourages people to visit the Game Sense website, which has resources for families and information and tools to help someone address problematic gambling.

BCLC also advises parents and guardians have open and honest conversations with their children about the risks associated with gambling.
