Garbage Disposal Fees

RDNO increasing disposal fees in 2022

Nov 10, 2021 | 4:01 PM

Effective Jan. 1, 2022, the disposal fees at the Regional District Of North Okanagan’s (RDNO) Diversion and Disposal Facilities and Transfer Stations will increase.

The minimum charge for garbage disposal will go from $6 to $8. The per tonne disposal fees are also increasing on Jan. 1.

The RDNO states the rate increase is being put in place for several reasons. The Diversion and Disposal Facilities (DDF) are mainly funded through disposal fees with a relatively small tax requisition, and fees cover operating, capital, and long-term closure costs.

The region-wide Solid Waste Management service must be financially sustainable on a long-term basis, and, as it also covers curbside collection and waste reduction strategies, RDNO said the fees that fund the service have to increase.

RDNO suggests people visit DDF’s less frequently with larger loads to reduce their payments. It’s noted that four bags cost the same to dispose of as two bags, and by consolidating trash into larger loads and visiting the sites less, it will also save the user money on fuel.

People can also reduce the amount of waste they generate by exploring composing options; take steps to ReTHINK Waste; recycle packaging and paper products; and by subscribing to curbside garbage collection if possible .
