Residents urged to visit proper sites for disposing waste from White Rock Lake wildfire

As people who’s properties were affected by the White Rock Lake wildfire move to the recovery phase, the public is reminded to dispose of their waste at appropriate sites.

The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) is moving into the recovery phase of the fire event and is supporting the collection and disposal of solid waste, such as food that spoiled during power outages, debris from the blaze, or other waste discovered during the clean-up stage.

With it being such a large amount of waste, spanning multiple jurisdictions, the RDNO wants to ensure that waste management facilities are not overburdened, and ask residents to only bring their waste to the corresponding landfills and transfer stations in their area.

Residents in Electoral Area B of RDNO must bring their fire-recovery-waste to the Greater Vernon Diversion and Disposal Facility, as the Armstrong/Spallumcheen Diversion and Disposal Facility doesn’t have the capacity for fire recovery waste and will only accept household garbage.

RDNO reminds the public that refrigerators and freezers must be fully cleaned out before they can be accepted at an RDNO Diversion and Disposal Facility. A qualified contractor will properly dismantle fridges and freezers so they don’t release ozone-depleting substances into the atmosphere, and then the items will be stripped and properly disposed of.

Regular disposal fees will apply for all materials disposed of at RDNO facilities.

Meanwhile, Regional District of Central Okanagan residents are encouraged to use the North Westside Road Transfer Station, the Trader’s Cover Transfer Station, the Westside Residential Disposal and Recycling Centre, or the Glenmore Landfill for the disposal of all waste related to fire recovery.
