Major reconstruction project to close Vernon intersection

Sep 16, 2021 | 3:45 PM

Roads, sidewalks, water mains, storm sewers and sanitary sewers are all being replaced as a major road reconstruction project on 31st Street in Vernon is set to begin Friday, Sept. 17.

The work will also see street lighting improved, safety improvements at the rail crossing installed and a new sidewalk built in the area north of the former Civic Arena site.

The work, which will begin at 6 a.m. Friday, will force the closure of the intersection of 31st St. and 39th Ave. It will remain closed until a new water main and concrete curbing is installed. It’s expected that this part of the project will be completed by the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 22.

The City of Vernon says public access to local businesses in the affected area will be maintained.

Detours will be available on Highway 97 and at the 29th St. and 38th Ave. roundabout, and the city asks that motorists obey all traffic control signs and slow down in work zones.
