252 new COVID-19 cases recorded in interior Wednesday

The active COVID-19 case count for Interior Health (IH) rose to 1,911 Wednesday as 252 new cases were confirmed in the region.

The new cases were part of 698 recorded across B.C. that day, and the provincial case count is now 5,356.

Of those active cases, 139 are hospitalized including 75 people who are in intensive care across the province.

In IH, there are 45 COVID-19 patients in hospital, 22 of whom are in critical care.

There was also one new death recorded in the Fraser Health region, bringing the provincial COVID-19 death-toll up to 1,802.

Two new health-care facility outbreaks were also recorded Wednesday, including the Spring Valley Care Centre in the interior. There are now 14 active outbreak sites, 11 of which are in the IH region.

Those outbreak sites consist of the residential facilities of Spring Valley Care Centre, Hawthorn Park, David Lloyd Jones, Cottonwoods Care Centre, Brookhaven Care Centre, Nelson Jubilee Manor, Hardy View Lodge and Kootenay Street Village, The Sun Pointe Village and Nicola Meadows assisted/independent living facilities are also still considered outbreak sites.

Meanwhile, the provincial first dose vaccination rate for British Columbians aged 12 and over rose to 83.5 per cent Wednesday, and 75.4 per cent of eligible residents have now received their second doses.

The province is also now reporting that between Aug. 10 and 23, British Columbians who aren’t fully vaccinated accounted for 83.3 per cent of cases and 85 per cent of hospitalizations.

Between Aug. 10 and 23, the unvaccinated made up 77 per cent of hospitalizations with 144 seeking treatment, while 15 partially vaccinated individuals comprised eight per cent of hospitalizations and 28 fully vaccinated patients made up 15 per cent of hospitalizations.

The province also announced that on Aug. 23, the unvaccinated accounted for 372 new cases that day, or 68.4 per cent; there were 53 partially vaccinated cases, or 9.7 per cent of the daily cases; and the fully vaccinated accounted for 21.9 per cent, or 119 new cases.
