More housing for people in need will be built in Vernon.

Mayor Victor Cumming said the city signed a housing agreement which was approved Monday with its partners to twin the apartment building known as My Place on 35th Street.

He says construction of the second, 52-unit building could begin later this year next to the current one.

“It’s been a tremendous success providing housing to those with the lowest income, and to have another 52 units under construction this winter would be tremendous,” Cumming told Vernon Matters.

Cumming said some people are referring to the new building as “My Place 2.”

The supportive housing project called My Place opened in the summer of 2019 on 35th Street.

The residents have access to supports and two staff members 24/7.

The facility is operated by the Turning Points Collaborative Society.
