Vernon business makes change due to soaring price of wings

Jun 22, 2021 | 10:48 AM

The wing used to be the least expensive part of a chicken, but that trend has taken flight, prompting a change by a Vernon business.

Rosters Sports Club Bar & Grill said wings have become a fan favourite across North America and prices have risen substantially, up 22 per cent in June alone. As a result of that, The Roster has revamped its popular Birthday Wing Special.

Club owner Hussein Hollands said the new special gives the birthday guest one pound of free chicken wings in celebration of their birthday with a minimum purchase of $10.

“We really don’t want to significantly up our pricing, and we know customers love the birthday special, so, we’ve made some changes,” Hollands said. “The old birthday special gave you and your guests up to 10 free wings per person, up to your birthday age, with a minimum $10 purchase per person.”

Hollands said the price of wings has gone up about four times more than consumer chicken prices over the last 20 years.

“They used to be the throwaway parts of the chicken and could be purchased very economically, but they’re now sought after.”

While staying in business amid restrictions is challenging for everyone, Hollands said Roster’s customers remain the highest priority.

“We are happy to keep on helping customers celebrate with our new traditional birthday special, as well as the Roster wing nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays after 5:00 p.m. and all day on Sundays,” Hollands said.

The Roster was established by Rob Morris 28 years ago.

Brenda Morris, Rob’s sister, who is still a server at The Roster, says wings and fries were a popular dinner for the Morris kids’ growing up.

“To this day, the Roster wings and fries are made the same way our mom used to make them,” said Brenda Morris. ”Many people say we have the best wings in town, and we hope that people will continue to enjoy birthday wings for years to come.”
