Greater Vernon Athletics Park in for upgrading

The Greater Vernon Athletics Park (GVAP) next to Okanagan College will undergo over $400,000 in renovations this year.

The perimeter pathway is one of the major items. It was scheduled to be done in phases, with a proper substrate and asphalt lift with a 20-year life span. The Regional District of North Okanagan has allocated additional reserve funds to do the entire path, at a total cost of $230,000.

Maintenance to the shotput area and replacement of the hammer cage netting will cost another $78,000.

The football goal posts that were improperly installed by the original contractor will cost $50,000 to replace. The contractor made the sleeve for the centre support too shallow, and then cut the post off. The result was the posts would tilt in the wind, and required shimming as a temporary measure.

Line repainting of the rubberized field and track surface will cost $ 60,000.

RDNO spent an additional $60,000 in 2020, to install LED solar lights for walkers using the track in the evening.

The total cost the new maintenance and replacement items is $418,000

The GVAP was opened Sept. 26, 2015 with a final price tag of $8.5 million.
