Staying with wood signage

Coldstream council welcomes new signs

Apr 13, 2021 | 1:45 PM

Coldstream council has decided to move ahead with new “Welcome to Coldstream” signs after a debate over materials.

The existing five wooden signs are deteriorating, and council has agreed to replace those in poor condition with new wood signs.

Coldstream passed on using a high density foam, similar to what was used to carve the “Welcome to Vernon” signs, but will replace cedar posts used on the current signs with galvanized steel posts.

“This goes with the flavour of our district, as well as the forestry aspect we have in our history,” Coun. Ruth Hoyte said.

The only change from the existing signs will be to move the “to” onto the same line as welcome, as shown below.

After reading the Vernon Matters story, several people on social media have noted the district’s slogan should read: “Rural Living At Its Best,” without the apostrophe in the word its, as shown in the concept designs.

There are two signs on Highway 6 at the west and east boundaries of the district, one is located on College Way after exiting Highway 97. Another is on Kalamalka Road just south of Alpine Centre in the Rail Trail parking area. The fifth sign is located on Middleton Way just south of the boundary.

“Over the years, each sign has had to be removed for maintenance work due to rotting and deterioration. In each instance the wooden post required replacing. It is anticipated that within the next three to five years the remaining wooden signs (four in total) will require replacing,”Mike Pethick, operations with the district, said in a report to council.

The costs range up to $6,000 per sign, plus installation fees.
