Armstrong approves first reading for golf course proposal

Mar 23, 2021 | 2:47 PM

Armstrong council has given preliminary support to a proposal to add 141 single-family housing lots on the Royal York Golf Club.

The applicant, Longview Resources Ltd., is also planning a reduced golf course, park land and trail connections as part of the development.

Mayor Chris Pieper said council approved first reading of the official community plan amendment bylaw which allows the city to find out more about the application.

“We will be having a couple of committee of the whole meetings over the next few months as the developer presents reports. These meetings will be public, so anybody that wants to listen in on them, they are more than welcome. It will give council and staff an opportunity to really understand everything that’s involved in a development of this size,” Pieper told Vernon Matters.

The application will be referred to 19 other agencies for their input.

“It’s a big deal for our community, so everybody will have input,” Pieper added.

UPDATE:

The City of Armstrong issued a news release on Tuesday afternoon, denouncing comments by Coun. James Wright made during council’s discussion Monday of first reading for the Longview/Royal York  OCP amendment.

“During discussions surrounding the bylaws Councillor James Wright made certain accusations regarding his perception of impropriety over the handling of the application,” stated a city news release. “The comments made by Councillor Wright are his alone and do not reflect on the City, its Council, City staff, or the developer in any way. Councillor Wright made these accusations during a public meeting of Council without substantiating them, and the City considers them baseless and inappropriate.

“During the meeting, the Chief Administrative Officer Kevin Bertles addressed Council, staff, the applicant and the public in attendance at the meeting and advised Councillor Wright that he resented the accusations and that they were irresponsible.

The City of Armstrong denounces the comments made by Councillor Wright,” the city release concluded.
