Armstrong launches organic waste pickup

The City of Armstrong has announced a new automated solid waste collection service that includes the diversion of organic waste.

The new collection program starting May 1 includes weekly pick-up of food waste and alternating bi-weekly pick-up of solid and green waste.

The diversion of organic waste has been a priority for council for years, and Mayor Chris Pieper is pleased council and staff have accomplished the goal.

“This is an important step forward for Armstrong. This collection program will reduce the amount of garbage going to landfills and we are happy to be working with SCV Contractors to see this happen,” Pieper said.

SCV Contractors is locally owned and operated. The company operates across the North and Central Okanagan, Shuswap, and Thompson regions.

All residential properties currently served by the city’s curbside collection service are identified as eligible properties for the new disposal streams.

Eligible properties will be provided with one 240 litre cart for solid waste and one smaller bin for food waste. All multi-family complexes currently being serviced by large format bins will continue to receive this service. Recycling services remain under the current management through the province and Recycle BC.

The city will continue to inform residents on the upcoming changes as the process moves forward. The City of Armstrong Solid Waste Service Bylaw No. 1871 includes a diverse list of acceptable materials including food waste, green waste and/or solid waste.
