The District of Coldstream has more child care spaces as of today.

The new Lavington Child Care facility officially opened Monday (Feb. 1). The centre, operated by Maven Lane, provides 32 new child care spaces, including 12 for under 36 months (infant toddler), 8 for 30 months to school age, and 12 school age spaces.

The new facility, at 9780 School Road in Centennial Park, was made possible by a $637,800 grant from the Childcare B.C. New Spaces Fund.

Mayor Jim Garlick said the new facility is a welcome addition to the community.

“This project has become a reality from the cooperative approach and hard work undertaken by the residents, staff and council. We would like to thank the Province of British Columbia and the Ministry of Children and Family Development for providing these funds which will help to address the child care shortage in our community,” Garlick said.

“This is an exciting time for families in the community and I congratulate everyone on this important milestone,” Harwinder Sandhu, MLA for Vernon-Monashee, stated. “By continuing to work together with partners like the District of Coldstream, we can make affordable, accessible and inclusive child care a reality for families in communities throughout B.C.”

Hollie Henderson, executive director of Maven Lane, said by partnering with the district, they hope to address the provincial child care crisis, as the need for additional child care spaces demands action.

“We are grateful for the decision to place early learning and care at the forefront for the Lavington community. With this partnership, we will truly make a difference in the lives of the children and families we connect with. We are excited to build a long lasting relationship with the community and thank you for your ongoing engagement and commitment,” Henderson said.

Maven Lane will also operate an 84-space child care centre in a proposed new community hall project next to the district office, and across the road from Coldstream Elementary School, on Kalamalka Road.
