BC ‘bee bucks’ a sweet deal to local bee keeper

A Vernon bee keeper is pleased to see the B.C. government putting funds into bee health awareness and projects to enhance bee habitat.

“It’s very encouraging. We’ve been banging on this drum for 23…25 years, and there didn’t seem to be much interest.” Planet Bee founder Ed Nowek said.

An intake for up to 24 projects and a value of $100,000 opens today for beekeepers, beekeeping associations and regional and community-based organizations, to promote and support bee health.

“Bees play a role in the everyday life of British Columbians and a vital role in our agricultural industry,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. “Farmers rely on bees to pollinate their crops and consumers rely on farmers to put fresh produce on their plates.”

“I first met Lana Popham five years ago at our provincial beekeeping association meetings on Vancouver Island and she has always stayed interested, so that’s a good thing,” Nowek said. “I will have the kids (staff) look at putting a submission in for a projec. We have the perfect venue for it, perhaps something interactive using technology.

On the business side of things, Planet Bee reports a solid December for sales of mead and honey products.

“January has slowed down, with the exception of beeswax candles, perhaps it’s a health thing or people are just looking for something to brighten up a tough time,” Nowek added.
