Council to discuss outdoor rink for Vernon

Vernon council will discuss an idea for the city to open an outdoor skating rink this winter, and one on a more permanent basis.

Councillor Scott Anderson proposed Polson Park as a temporary site in a notice of motion for council’s regular meeting on Monday, Jan. 11.

He’s calling for a natural skating rink to be opened no later than February 15, 2021.

The veteran council member will also be asking city staff to provide locations and costs for a permanent rink by April, 2021.

Councillor Dalvir Nahal originally brought up an outdoor rink idea last year, but it was determined the costs would be too high.

Anderson obtained information that it could be done more economically, and is encouraging council should take another look at it.

Anderson’s notice of motion directs administration to include in the estimate both the capital and maintenance costs for natural and artificial ice, and to get estimates for lighting services.

Vernon’s popular Centennial outdoor rink has been closed this winter after a chiller needed replacing last fall and the city said it was unlikely a replacement could be installed by the spring.
