Snowmobiler rescued on Hunters Range

Dec 30, 2020 | 10:54 AM

An injured snowmobiler had to be rescued on Hunters Range yesterday with the assistance of Vernon Search and Rescue (VSAR) team members in the Hunters Range area near Enderby.

Snowmobile team members and Heli-winch team members worked together with local snowmobilers who were on scene with the injured subject. Difficult terrain and poor weather contributed to the rescue being challenging. The injured subject was extracted from the hillside by helicopter and transferred into the care of an Air Ambulance team waiting nearby.

The injured snowmobiler was lucky that those individuals nearby the accident had significant first aid skills, had good communications with first responders, and that the time of day gave aerial rescue teams sufficient daylight for the task.

“Vernon Search & Rescue would like to remind all snowmobilers and back-country enthusiasts to always go prepared with sufficient gear and to file a trip plan with family and friends… All of which can be invaluable when emergencies happen and help is needed,” VSAR stated on its Facebook page.

Avalanche Canada indicates that while it has downgraded backcountry warnings, additional heavy snowfall and changing temperatures could create avalanche conditions. Back country snowmobilers and other users should proceed with extreme cautions and check the mountain forecast before venturing out.
