No sugar for Triumph Coffee on parking stall patio

Dec 16, 2020 | 5:30 AM

An effort by a downtown Vernon coffee shop to have an accessible parking stall moved to accomodate a curbside patio has fizzled at city council.

Triumph Coffee located at 3401 30th Ave., had sought to have the parking stall moved and wanted to add patio space,. This was the third attempt to get approval.

The accessible stall is offset due to the intersection and sits mostly in front of the neighboring business.

Staff indicated moving the stall, which has been in that location since 1998, would cost between $5,000 and $10,000.

“I have been monitoring the situation, and there is a lot of usage. This is putting council in a tough position,” Coun. Brian Quiring said.

The owners of The Room Collection, The Fig, Grillers Meats and Raven Hair Studio all signed a letter opposing the removal of the handicapped accessible stall.

“This parking meter has been an incredible addition to downtown Vernon and its customers. The specific location is perfect, considering the demographic of shoppers that we see on our block. We all have many customers that use this stall on a daily basis to easily access our businesses. We believe that it would be a mistake and a completely unnecessary expense to either move or remove this meter, considering all the good it is doing for the citizens of our community,” David Scarlatescu, owner of The Fig, said.

Triumph owner Dudley Coulter concedes he has some work to do with the neighbours, and will be continuing those discussions.

“They didn’t get the full story. No one wants to lose parking. I don’t want to get rid of a handicapped spot,” Coulter told Vernon Matters. “It’s just for the spring and summer, and adds some ambiance to the downtown. I think this can still happen.”

The Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce wrote a letter in support of a temporary relocation of the accessible spot for the spring and summer.

As a COVID-19 relief measure, Vernon council will allow curbside patios to help smaller restaurants and coffee shops expand their seating.
