A steady drizzle was falling Friday afternoon, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the general manager of Orchard Valley Retirement Residence in downtown Vernon.

Under his mask and face shield, Leighton Byfield was sporting an ear to ear grin as he handed out Thanksgiving dinner to seniors, in a drive thru event.

“We would have loved to have everyone come in and have a sit down dinner, but with COVID-19 that just isn’t possible,” Leighton said. “We are doing the next best thing by sending people home with a pre-packaged turkey dinner that they can put in the microwave or oven and enjoy.”

“It’s not something I would probably do for myself so it’s a wonderful gesture,” Pam Phillips told Vernon Matters, as she received her take-away though her car window.

“Thanksgiving is a time people normally get together with family, so it’s especially tough on seniors who might be isolated. We just wanted to give something back,” Byfield added.
