Vernon looks to the future with reviews of community and transportation plans

The City of Vernon is reviewing two major planning documents, and the public has a chance to have its say as part of the process.

The joint review of the Official Community Plan (OCP) and Transportation Plan (TP) began Wednesday, and the public is invited to provide input into the plans.

The OCP lays out strategies for community long-term growth and development through planning and land-use decisions in Vernon.

The OCP review will also help identify what kind of residential development projects are needed in Vernon, and where those can be built. It will also help guide the expansion of future commercial, industrial, institutional, agricultural, recreational and public land.

“An additional 20,000 people are expected to move to Vernon by 2045,” Mayor Victor Cumming said.

“We need a robust plan to accommodate this growth while maintaining our unique character.”

The transportation plan sets priorities for investments into the transportation system, including development of new roads, public transit and cycling paths.

“Our neighbourhoods and transportation networks are interconnected,” Barbara Everdene, Vernon’s Long Range Planner, added.

“The OCP and TP ensure that we create vibrant, accessible spaces for everyone.”

The public is invited to provide their insights and feedback on the two plans through an online survey, which will be available until July 1. People can also visit the Community Services Building to pick up a physical copy of the survey

The city will also staff information kiosks at events throughout the community during the spring and summer that people can visit to learn more about the plans.
