Crunch time on Cultural Centre plan

Sep 8, 2020 | 5:25 AM

The clock is ticking on a political decision at the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee (GVAC) on the size and operational scope of the Greater Vernon Cultural Centre.

A special GVAC meeting has been called for September 23 to hammer out the details, so that a grant application to the federal government for the Investing in Canada Infrastructure program can go forward.

The GVAC board voted unanimously last week to move the seating in the community space from 75 to 200 seats, but final decisions on the scope of operations and the overall size of the building still need to be made.

“Museums and art galleries have evolved and there may not be a requirement to house thousands of hard copy documents and pictures as has been done in the past,” said Vernon Mayor Victor Cumming.

Taxpayers voted in the 2018 municipal election to fund $25 million of the proposed $40 million dollar cost of the centre that would house an art gallery, museum and community space, with the remaining funds coming from borrowing, fundraising and grants.
