Kelowna crews also tackled blaze

West Kelowna fire a ‘significant danger’

West Kelowna area firefighters had a real fight on their hands as they tackled a blaze on Colleen Road just after midnight.

West Kelowna Fire Rescue crews were first on the scene, finding a fully-involved fire in a large outbuilding.

Crews from Westbank, Rose Valley and Glenrosa stations were called in.

“The fire was quickly knocked down, however crews were challenged with a large amount of debris and stored materials on the property,” said fire chief Jason Brolund. “The fire briefly extended into trees but firefighters were able to keep it away from nearby buildings.

“The fire building posed a significant danger to firefighters due to it’s compromised structure, unstable basement and unknown contents, so the fire was fought defensively from the outside.”

Brolund said four fire engines and 18 firefighters responded along with RCMP, BC Ambulance, Fortis Gas and B.C. Hydro.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.

“The public is reminded to keep your yard tidy to ensure easy access for firefighters who may be called to put out a fire. This makes our job safer and easier.”

Meanwhile, just before 10 p.m. Thursday night, Kelowna Fire dispatch received a 911 call reporting smoke coming from a garage in the 300 block of Patterson Road.

“On scene, the first arriving officer confirmed a fire in the detached garage,” said platoon captain Dennis Miller. “The crews performed an offensive attack and quickly extinguished the fire.”

Miller said three engines, a command unit and rescue truck along with 15 fire personnel were on scene to fight the fire along with assistance from RCMP and the ambulance service.

He said the cause of the fire is unknown but an investigation is underway.
