Watch your speed in school zones

It’s almost back to school time.

Starting Sept. 8, City of Vernon RCMP volunteers will begin Speed Watch operations in school zones.

“The purpose of the Speed Watch program is to enhance road safety, educate drivers and increase awareness around issues of unsafe speed,” says Regan Borisenko, crime prevention coordinator with the City of Vernon. “Trained volunteers use a digital speed reader board to display the driver’s speed in relation to the posted speed limit in that zone.”

The initiative is to make the motoring public aware of the change in speed in school zones now that students going are back to class.

But, over the next few weeks, front-line RCMP officers from the Vernon North Okanagan detachment will take part in order to issued violation tickets to speeding motorists.
