Property taxes continue to trickle in to City of Vernon coffers.

As of Aug. 21, almost 85 per cent of 2020 property taxes were paid, according to city spokesperson Christy Poirier.

“I have seen many people come in to pay their property taxes over the last couple of months,” Poirier said.

The yearly property tax is usually due by July 2 but many cities across the country gave taxpayers more time in case they were suffering financially due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

By July 2, 2019, 86 per cent of property taxes were paid to the city on time.

By July 2, 2020, just 73 per cent of Vernon property taxes were paid with $19.7 million still to be collected.

“Property owners in Vernon have a few more weeks to pay their 2020 property taxes without penalty,” Poirier advised. “A 10 per cent penalty will be applied to unpaid City of Vernon property taxes as of Oct. 1.”
