Kayakers welcome at Coldstream launch

Aug 27, 2020 | 10:57 AM

Coldstream council has formally approved the Westkal boat launch as a non-motorized launch only.

“We formally did it [at Monday’s council meeting] because for the last three years it has been closed off anyway and people have been using it as a hand launch. We’ve said that moving forward we’ll continue to use it that way,” Mayor Jim Garlick said.

Garlick said massive flooding in 2017 caused damage to the launch that needed repairs. He added the road is quite narrow for a vehicle with a motorboat.

Neighbours were also against a return to a motorized boat launch.

“We heard from residents in the area and looking at it, is that we would have that launch as a non-motorized launch, like a hand launch, so things like kayaks, canoes, boards,” Garlick said.

Meanwhile, $40,000 is to be spent on a detailed design of the Westkal Road improvement project.

“The feedback received was that the overwhelming majority of respondents wanted to maintain parking,” Garlick said.

He said some on-street parking will be maintained where possible and that a half-roundabout will likely be built to help with traffic flow.
