Stage 2 water rules for SE Kelowna

Aug 26, 2020 | 12:13 PM

Watering restrictions for Southeast Kelowna, including Gallagher’s Canyon and McCulloch East, have shifted to Stage 2, where irrigation can now occur twice weekly.

“Our first priority in protecting the water system is to ensure the quality of drinking water for residents and then to preserve supply for health and safety purposes, including fire mitigation,” said Andy Weremy, water operations manager.

He said operational adjustments, conservation efforts by residents and cooler nights are lowering demand on the water system to allow some loosening of outdoor watering restrictions.

Hall Road and Crawford neighbourhoods were previously shifted to Stage 2 and those restrictions remain in effect.

“We hope residents consider conservation tips like leaving grass longer, leaving grass clippings in place as mulch and putting water only where it is needed,” said Weremy. “Only one inch of water per week is needed for turf irrigation and that amount typically drops as we approach fall and cooler temperatures.”

To request assistance from a Water Smart representative to adjust automatic irrigation systems, or for general inquiries or questions about the watering restrictions in place for this area, call 250-469-8520.

“The conversion of Southeast Kelowna into the City water utility is the largest capital project the City has undertaken to date and while residents have clean drinking water in their homes, project work like meter installs and commissioning is ongoing,” said Weremy. “We appreciate resident’s patience and their cooperation.”

Residents are asked to adhere to designated days and times, and to avoid excessive watering, even on designated days.

The restrictions do not apply to properties watering from the non-potable (McCulloch) supply.
