Fire fuels very dry

Public praised for fighting Lumby wildfire

Lumby Fire Chief Tony Clayton is praising members of the public for their efforts in fighting a wildfire that started within the city limits on Sunday afternoon.

It’s believed to have been human-caused.

Clayton said fire crews were called out around 4:30 p.m. to the Cedar Ridge Road fire.

“When we got there, we saw about a half dozen members of the public doing a great job, packing water up on their four-wheelers (quad bikes) and using shovels on the fire,” Clayton told Vernon Matters.

About nine members of the Lumby fire department attended with a bush truck and two water trucks and finished extinguishing the blaze.

He said the fire was approximately two metres by two metres in size and, as luck would have it, the bushy area was fairly green.

However Clayton warns the North Okanagan is still in the midst of fire season.

“The grass and fire fuels are really dry. It’s still only mid-August,” he said.

The fire chief is urging anyone with information about how the fire started to contact the Lumby fire department or call the RCMP.
