Proposed active living centre gets study and campaign funding

Funding is in place that could lead to a referendum next year on an active living centre for Greater Vernon.

The proposed $90 million facility would include a 50 metre pool, leisure pool, double gymnasium, a fitness track, 80-station fitness centre, and eight multi-purpose studios.

Vernon mayor Victor Cumming says city council has approved $55,000 for design and geotechnical work on the Kin Race Track site on 43rd Avenue.

“If anything gets developed at the Kin Race Track site, we’ve got to do the geotechnical, so that needs to get underway right away. And over the next number of months, conversations will be had about this next broader process but we wanted the resources in place if case it needed to move quickly,” Cumming told Vernon Matters.

Council has approved another $145,000 in next year’s budget to conduct an assent voting and communication campaign for the proposed centre.

It appears the earliest a referendum would be held is in the fall of 2021.

“ln looking at the potential timing for a referendum or assent voting, it is believed that mid to late October would be the best time of year for a standalone assent voting to take place. Assent voting is often conducted at the same time as an election as the planning, organization, staffing and facilities required are much the same,” said a report to council from Doug Ross, director, recreation services.
