Heat warning issued

Aug 16, 2020 | 8:09 AM

It could be the last few days of scorching temperatures this summer.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the North, Central and South Okanagan, along with other areas of the Interior.

Temperatures will be in the high 30’s and could reach 40 degrees Celsius, combined with overnight lows near 18 degrees Celsius, for the next two days.

A ridge of high pressure has been building over southern B.C. this weekend with temperatures peaking today then gradually declining as the week progresses.

“Today will be the hottest day with maximum temperatures reaching the mid- to upper-30s, likely hitting 40 at Lytton,” said a statement fro Environment Canada. “Overnight temperatures will only cool to the upper teens, and may in fact stay above 20 in windier locations of the Fraser Canyon. High temperatures on Monday will be two or three degrees cooler than today’s highs.”

Highs will reach the mid 30’s again on Tuesday, but there should be some relief Monday night which will be cooler. This may be enough to technically end this heat wave at some locations.

The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

Reduce your heat risk. Schedule outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day.

Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.
