Greater Vernon water rates still fluid

Greater Vernon’s water rates will be finalized this fall.

The current three-year rate structure set in 2018, comes to an end this year for residential, commercial and other water users.

Greater Vernon Advisory Committee (GVAC) chair Akbal Mund says a general discussion was held at their meeting this week, but more information is needed before they decide on possible fee hikes.

“The final decision on water probably won’t come until late October or November,” Mund told Vernon Matters.

Special GVAC meetings will be held in September and October.

The fees used to be set by GVAC directors and the RDNO board in the spring, but Mund says setting them later in the year, for the following year, makes more sense.

The new rates will take effect in January 2021.

A RDNO staff report said Greater Vernon Water is the third largest water utility by volume in B.C.

“It is a complex utility with a large agricultural base as well as a large domestic customer base with flows that fluctuate from about 15 MLD (megaliters per day) to 200 MLD. This results in a fairly complex rate structure that includes fees and rates for the agricultural and domestic (residential, industrial, commercial and institutional) sectors with various development and operational charges to strive for equity of service,” stated the report from Zee Marcolin, general manager, utilities.
