Hunt for stolen vehicle and suspects not over yet

Jul 7, 2020 | 3:42 PM

Police found a stolen vehicle, but have so far, not been able to track down the suspects.

Air services and police dog teams were involved in a two-day search after a pickup truck was stolen in West Kelowna.

“Shortly after 2 p.m. on July 5, RCMP received a report of a theft of a pickup truck taken from a residence along Smith Creek Road in West Kelowna. Investigators were told the grey 2015 GMC Sierra pickup truck was taken sometime overnight,” said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy.

Noseworthy said the stolen vehicle was reported several times throughout the afternoon of July 6, allegedly being driven in an erratic manner in the Central Okanagan.

“Due to the dangerous behaviour of the auto theft suspect, RCMP requested the assistance of Kelowna RCMP Air Services in an effort to locate the stolen vehicle from above,” she said.

The truck was eventually spotted Monday evening on the Bear Lake Forest Service Road by a police helicopter pilot.

Two male occupants were seen inside the pickup truck, but allegedly fled on foot into the back country prior to the arrival of officers.

Two police dog teams also attended the area to search from the ground, but the suspects were not located.

“The investigation is active and ongoing at this time,” said Noseworthy.
