Two-time lottery winner

Most people dream of winning a lottery just once in their lifetime, but a B.C. resident has been lucky enough to do it twice.

David O’Brien of Burnaby won the $1 million guaranteed prize from the June 20, 2020 Lotto 6/49, which he describes as “mind boggling.”

Four years ago, O’Brien won $5 million playing Lotto 6/49 on May 4, 2016, when he matched all six numbers to win the jackpot.

O’Brien, who purchased his latest winning ticket at a 7-Eleven Store on Kingsway Street in Burnaby, said his wife didn’t believe him when he broke the good news.

“She thought I was joking when I told her,” he recalled after claiming his prize using BCLC’s alternate prize-claim process. They celebrated over cake and coffee the night he learned he’d won.

Of his plans for his second big win? Since he’s retired, travel is on the top of his list. “I’ve always loved travelling and I’ve always wanted to travel to India,” O’Brien said.

And who knows? Perhaps he will win again someday as he says he will he continue playing the lottery.

“Yes – I really like playing,” he said.
