Club raises funds selling hand sanitizer

Kelowna has been hit hard by the Covid-19 outbreak, but the city’s curling club isn’t taking it sitting down.

Thanks to Sanipur and its membership base, the Kelowna Curling Club is selling case lots of hand sanitizer for home and business use.

The funds go back to the club that took a hit larger than normal. Not only were all regular summer events cancelled the 2020 World Mixed Doubles and World Seniors that were scheduled in April were lost as well. This put up a larger than normal barrier to recovery.

Club president Brendan Willis says they suffered severe losses from COVID and the shutdown of the world championships and summer events.

“Your curling club is looking for ways to raise capital as we do not want to borrow more money than necessary. I am asking all of you to consider this fundraiser not only for yourselves, but for friends, family, and businesses you know. One of the most sought-after products right now is hand sanitizer. At times it can be difficult to find on the shelves. If you, or anyone you know, is in the market for hand sanitizer, please direct them to us. We could really use your help to raise funds and to help save your curling club,” said Willis.

The Kelowna Curling Club is a not-for-profit society that was started in 1942. With 12 sheets of ice it is the largest ice surface dedicated to curling. (Red Deer and Regina Caledonian also have 12).

The curling season in Kelowna runs from October to end of March. March 6-14 2021 Kelowna is playing host to the largest curling event in the world, the Brier. It will be held at Prospera Place and will have the best 16 men’s teams in the country competing to go the Worlds and earn valuable points towards a spot at the Olympic Trials.
