UPDATE: Storm soaks city; Polson Park closed due to flooding

Jun 11, 2020 | 4:31 PM

UPDATE 5 p.m.

Polson Park in Vernon has been closed until further notice due to flooding.

While people were still using the skateboard park and walking in the park Thursday evening, the gates that restrict vehicles from driving around the park were closed.

“The safety of our residents, visitors and staff is our top priority, so the public is asked to stay out of Polson Park and away from all creeks and creek banks – particularly with children and pets – as local creek levels continue to fluctuate,” said Christy Poirier, communications manager with the city.

The city has closed 24th Avenue (between 34th Street and 39th Street) to through traffic due to flooding along 24th Avenue and 34A Street. City crews have also placed sandbags along 24th avenue and 36th Street due to the high creek levels.

“Motorists are asked to slow down as they drive around town, as the storm sewer system has been overwhelmed by today’s sudden rain storm. City crews are now on site checking for creek blockages, flooded areas and open man holes across Vernon,”Poirier added.

While the water is receding, if residents see flooding or an area of concern, they can call the after hours emergency line at 250-542-5361.

First responders are investigating reports of localized flooding in Vernon after a short but significant downpour Thursday afternoon

Heavy rain and lightning were part of a system that moved through the city around around 3 p.m., producing major water pooling on some city streets as storm drains couldn’t keep up.

The deluge lasted about 20 minutes, and was intense enough to produce flash flooding, and also raised creek levels.

A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for the Central and South Okanagan into this evening, but that doesn’t include the North Okanagan.
