29 new COVID cases, no new deaths

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has reported 29 new cases of COVID-19 in the province between Saturday to Monday plus one epidemiologically-linked case.

There are no new deaths but 16 remain in hospital, including four in intensive care.

Henry said health officials continue to follow a number of community outbreaks but she also announced the end of outbreaks at two Lower Mainland poultry operations and one senior’s residence in the Fraser Valley.

There are four active outbreaks in longterm care.

There are no new cases in Interior Health, the total of which remains at 195.

Henry is urging people making plans for summer travel to be as self-sufficient as possible and keep a small number of connections.

Meanwhile, a ban on non-essential crossings of the U.S.-Canada border is being loosened.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the change in restrictions is to allow for some families to reunite.

But he said the rule requiring anyone entering the country to self-isolate for two weeks remains in effect. Trudeau said it will continue to be strictly enforced.

The border with the United States has been closed since March, except for goods and certain categories of essential workers.

In Victoria, Health Minister Adrian Dix said the province will “continue to be vigilant” as the border restrictions loosen, pointing to ongoing outbreaks in a number of U.S. states, including Washington and California.
