A number of police vehicles were searching in downtown Vernon Thursday night, responding to a report of a woman who was assaulted, and her purse stolen, by two young males.

A robbery in the 3300 block of 31st Avenue, by the former Legion building, was called in around 10 p.m.

“Good citizens stopped to render aid to the woman and were able to provide detailed descriptions of the suspects to police, which aided in their arrest,” said Const. Kelly Brett, media relations officer.

Brett said officers responded quickly with multiple units, and set up a perimeter

“With the descriptions provided by witnesses, police were able to locate two young males who were attempting to flee the area, however they didn’t get far before officers had taken them into custody.”

The 35-year-old victim suffered minor injuries and was treated by paramedics, and her purse and the contents were recovered by police.

The suspects, 21 and 17 year old males, both from Vernon, were released on conditions with a future court date.
