B.C.’s top doctor has rejected taking a punitive approach to people who are breaking physical distancing guidelines aimed at stamping out COVID-19.

Henry issued a positive message Monday, stating that if things go well this week, B.C. will be in phase two of the recovery by next week.

“Everybody in B.C. has been doing their part and we are now in a much better place than we were a number of months ago,” Henry said during a news conference.

Since Saturday, another 23 people in B.C. have tested positive for novel coronavirus.

One other person has died.

There are no new cases or deaths in Interior Health.

Henry welcomed the end of the outbreak among foreign workers at Bylands Nursery in West Kelowna.

When asked about crowded parks and beaches last weekend, Henry admitted she herself saw a lot of people outside.

“The vast majority of them were in small groups, they were sitting apart from each other, they were socializing, they were out in the sun,” Henry said. “The vast majority are doing the right thing and taking this to heart and I thank them because that’s how we’re going to get through this.”

The doctor said most people were reasonable and only a small majority of people were breaking the guidelines.
