Kelowna care home clear of COVID

COVID-19 outbreaks at two long term care facilities, including Hawthorne Park-Orchard Manor in Kelowna and the Lynn Valley Care Centre in North Vancouver, have been declared over.

However provincial health officer Bonnie Henry says active outbreaks at 22 other facilities continue, including three new outbreaks in Vancouver-Coastal Health.

While there were only eight new confirmed COVID cases in the province on Tuesday, Henry also announced four new deaths – none in the Interior Health region.

The premier is expected tomorrow to announce a lifting of some of the measures taken in March to battle the new coronavirus.

But Henry warned British Columbians not to plan play dates in the coming days.

“We are not yet through this,” insisted Henry. “There’s a long way to go for all of us.”

Henry said orders and restrictions remain in place.

“So please don’t start planning your play dates and expanding your bubble too soon. We need to hold the line right now. We still have outbreaks that are happening in our communities and in our longterm care and acute care facilities.”

She said modeling has shown that all of the effort by B.C. and its citizens can be quickly undone if measures are lifted too quickly.

Hinting at what might be in Horgan’s announcement, Henry said officials had been reviewing what types of activities and team sports can move forward and what retails sectors might reopen.

“Few faces and big spaces is what we need to think about,” said Henry. “No handshaking or hugging right now.”
