B.C. Covid update: 100 days since first provincial warning

Apr 30, 2020 | 3:31 PM

It’s been 100 days since British Columbia health officials issued the first official warning about what was then called the novel coronavirus.

“We did it because we were concerned about what this detection in China, at the time, might mean for all of us,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial health officer. “And how we needed to pay attention to this virus, and needed to start preparing for it coming here to British Columbia.”

Henry said our lives, communities and businesses have dramatically changed over the 100 days, but one thing has stayed the same.

“And that is the unwavering commitment of everybody here in British Columbia to work together and keep our firewall strong, to do everything we can to protect our communities, our seniors and elders in particular, and our families.”

Henry will be updating Covid-19 models for the province in the coming days which she says will help B.C. move into this next phase, a “go forward plan” which Premier John Horgan will introduce next week.

She urged everyone to “stay strong” and continue to “bend our curve down.”

Health Minister Adrian Dix reiterated the health care system is available to people struggling with issues other than Covid-19, noting the current level of utilization in the system is 63 per cent.

“People are returning [to emergency rooms], and we appreciate that.”
