City considers need for organics program

Apr 20, 2020 | 5:10 AM

Armstrong is following the lead of Vernon and other communities in looking into an organics waste program.

Mayor Chris Pieper said the costs are being investigated, and he’s inviting residents to let the city know if they want it, or not.

“It would be great to hear from the residents,” Pieper told Vernon Matters. “Do they want composting? If you do, let me know, or send an email to city hall, or if you think it’s crazy.”

The mayor said it would be an added cost to residents, but it would reduce the impact on landfills.

“We have wanted to get involved in the organics collection and disposal, That would be a separate pick- up, It would be a reduction to the landfill. Our garbage collection contract expires in a year from now so were trying to put together some sort of program where we could reduce our amount of landfill material and have an organics solution to it,” Pieper added.

Pieper said the regional district and Vernon are exploring organics programs and Salmon Arm started one a few years ago.

“It’s not anything new for the province. Victoria has it and they have a separate bin like recycling for organics and it’s picked up. So if we can do it, and it’s affordable, we’ve got some time now to do it. We’ll be looking at it through the summer, and if we can come up with a method, then we’ll have to find out what it will cost and see if it’s worthwhile.”
