RCMP notify police watchdog of Sicamous incident

Apr 15, 2020 | 5:38 PM

RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Sicamous which has resulted in injuries to one man and one officer.

Just before noon on April 14, RCMP received a report of a suspicious person on a forest service road located near Sicamous off Highway 97A. The description of the vehicle led officers to believe the suspicious person was a man known to have outstanding arrest warrants and to have failed to stop for police previously.

The local officers requested assistance from RCMP from neighbouring detachments including Salmon Arm and Revelstoke.

Officers located the man and made unsuccessful attempts to stop his vehicle. The man was located after his vehicle had been involved in a collision. During the course of taking the man into custody, there was interaction between an officer and the man, both of whom were injured.

The man and an RCMP officer were transported to hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries and have since been released. The officer is recovering at home, while the man remains in police custody.

Sicamous officers are continuing to investigate the new criminal code and driving infractions, while IIO BC is investigating to determine whether police actions are linked to the man’s injuries. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
